Host: Hi everyone! Today, we are thrilled to welcome Leon, our new exchange student from New Zealand, who will spend 10 months studying at our school. Let’s get to know him and hear about his unique experiences in China, impressions of our school, and cross-cultural adventures!

Part 1: First Impressions of China

Host: Welcome to China! Is this your first time here? What was your impression of China before arriving, and how do you feel now compared to reality?

LeonBefore coming to China I had the impression that China was a very big and cold country with lots of good food. Upon arrival, it turned out to be even colder than I expected. The country is so vast that it took me an entire day to get from Beijing to Tongling. The air in China is very dry compared to New Zealand.

Host: Have you encountered any surprising cultural differences or “culture shocks”?

LeonEverybody just uses Alipay, so paying for things in this way is very new for me.

HostWe heard you’ve tried many Chinese dishes—do you have a favorite?

LeonI have tried a lot of good food in China, I don’t have a specific favorite but I really like pork dishes and meat buns.

Host: What are your thoughts on our campus environment and the atmosphere among teachers and students?

LeonEverybody is so energetic and welcoming, I feel like the students enjoying learning as they are very active in class. The teachers are also very good as they encourage engagement and get through topics fast in China.

Host: How do the classes or teaching styles here differ from those at your home school?

LeonThe classes are short but efficient. In New Zealand, classes are longer and the teachers teach very slowly. Teachers only teach for the first 10 to 20 minutes of the class, then sit back and watch.

Host: Have you joined any clubs or participated in campus events? Any interesting moments with classmates?

LeonI have been invited to join many things but not had the time. Hopefully next week I 'll have enough time to take part in.

Part 3:Cultural collision and fusion

HostWhat’s the biggest difference you’ve noticed in daily habits between students from China and your home country?

LeonStudents are allowed to leave school during lunch and go shopping. School days are very long compared to New Zealand but students in New Zealand only get a total of one hour of break time.

HostWhat“Chinese element” do you most want to bring back home from this exchange experience?

LeonI wish to bring back Chinese music culture with me to New Zealand. Because I have always been a big fan of music, and in China I will let to see a different side of it and I would also like to learn Chinese.

HostFinally, what advice would you give to Chinese students planning to study in your country, or to foreign students interested in coming to China?

LeonNew Zealand is a welcoming place. You will make many friends if you go on exchange there. School days are also very short, so you will have more time for sports activities. As for advice, It is relatively dry here, if you live in a humid country, take that into consideration. School days are longer in China, so be prepared for that as well.

HostThank you very much for your sharing! We hope every day in China brings you joy and growth, and we wish you to become a bridge for cultural exchange!
